Therapeutic Approach

Therapy involves healing, growth and change within a relational context.  I work with each client to establish a safe and authentic therapy relationship where people can experiment with new ways of relating, thinking, and being. I have extensive training combining verbal or “talk” therapy with work with the body (through a focus on breathing, grounding, self-expressive movement, relaxation) to help people connect with their deeper feelings and needs.  Paying attention to and working with the body in psychotherapy often connects people more deeply with their life story and draws upon a new inner knowing.  Through this approach we gradually build trust in our body/mind as a guide and healing resource. As a Relational Life couples therapist I find that couples often seek relationship counseling to change repetitive arguments or to bridge an emotional distance that affects one or both partners.  I use Relational Life therapy to teach couples the skills to be intimate in a way that is deeply satisfying.  Through learning how to be responsive to our partner while honoring and remaining connected to our own needs and feelings, we build a “cherishing relationship”. Clients often need to know their therapist has “been there” in terms of personally experiencing struggle, suffering, healing and growth.  I am committed to my own psychotherapy, engage in clinical supervision and participate in therapist peer support groups.
